The answer is - it depends.  The correct answer might actually be "none".  We have many clients operating their book-keeping using spreadsheets.  For those clients the spreadsheet option is sufficient and there is no incremental cost assuming you already have access to one of the leading programmes such as Excel or Numbers.  If a software package is for you then the "new norm" is to use a cloud based package.  These are powerful and yet easy to use systems and the cloud functionality is brilliant!

Other considerations for accounting packages include:

• The skills and experience of whoever will be using or inputting information into the software package;

• The need for the accounting software to integrate with other software which is business-critical;

• Whether it fits with your information needs, for example allowing costings for a production process and stock valuation, or budgeting;

• For VAT-registered businesses, that it is compliant with HMRC’s requirements under MTD (Making Tax Digital).

Whatever the package, it should come with recommendations for both the product and support, be highly secure, and preferably be cloud-based so that you benefit from the functionality benefits.
